Language And Literature in Bihar
Language in Bihar forms the cultural identity and its linguistic boundary. After independence,Hindi was choosen as the state language while Urdu was delegated as second language in 1984. Infact, Bihari Hindi is the mix form of Hindi and Urdu.
Languages of Bihar (Bihar GK in English)
Dr George Grierson, an expert in Bihari language, has divided language of Bihar into two family:
Language of Munda Family
Language of Munda family is a mixture of Magahi and tribal language (also known as Nagpuria). Two dialects of this family spoken in Bihar are:
Vajjika
➤ It is the language of Vajji Janpad. It has been developed from Maithili language. It is spoken in Vaishali and Muzaffarpur districts.
➤ Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Sheohar and Begusarai have also Vajjika speaking people.
It is Western dialect of Maithili language.
➤ There are also 2 lakh speakers of this language in Nepal.
Angika
➤ It is the language of Bhagalpur. It is a sub-language of Maithili, also called as Bhagalpuri.
➤ ‘Lalit Vistar’ is a Buddhist text written in old Angika script in 6th century.
➤ It is also spoken in Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and other South-East Asian countries.
➤ The native speakers of the Angika language is 30 to 40 million.
➤ Tej Narayan Kushwaha has popularised Angika language by writing history of Angika language.
Language of Aryan Family
Three dialects of this family spoken in Bihar are:
Bhojpuri
➤ The descendants of Raja Bhoja had established a new state in Malla Janpad, whose capital was Bhojpur. It is the reason that the language being spoken here is called as Bhojpuri.
➤ The language developed as a result of the social and spiritual movements in Bihar and Bengal during the middle ages. This language developed as part of the Bhakti literature.
➤ In 17th century, it was developed by Dharti Das and Dariya Das, while in modern time it was developed by Mahendra Mishra, Bhikhari Thakur and Babu Raghubir Nath.
➤ ‘Bidesiya’ is the most famous work of Rai Bahadur Bhikhari Thakur. ‘Kaikeyi and Rituvansh’ are famous writings of Kedarnath Mishra. Manoranjan and Raghubir Narayan have written ‘Firangiya’ and ‘Batohiya’.
Maithili
➤ The term ‘Maithili’ originates from an ancient state of Northern Bihar, Mithila.
The earliest records of the language dates back to 8th century. Mithila is considered as the capital of King Janak’s kingdom.
➤ Maithili has gained importance as the language of Bihar. It is also spoken by 12% of population in Nepal. Current form of Maithili language originated from 10th century.
➤ Varn Ratnakar is known to be the first composition in Maithili language which was written by Jyotireshwar Thakur. It is also spoken in Southern parts of Nepal.
➤ On 22nd December, 2003, Maithili was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution by the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003.
➤ Great poet of Maithili language is Mahakavi Vidyapati. Other prominent writers are Mahesh Thakur, Mahinath Thakur, Hari Mohan Jha, Bhanu Kavi, Govind Das, Rudra Dhara, Jyotireshwar Thakur, etc.
Magahi
➤ This was the language of the ancient empires that were established at Magadha.
The language do not has a history of written literature. It was mostly used as part of folk songs and expressed orally only.
➤ During the medieval period, this language was restricted to devotional songs mostly sung in Ashramas, Peethas and Mathas.
➤ It was spoken in ancient Magadhan empire. At present, it is spoken in Patna Nalanda, Nawada and Gaya district.
➤ First poet of Magahi was Ishan. Yogeshwar Singh ‘Yogesh’ was the most famous writer in Magahi. He has created an epic called ‘Gautam’. Laxmi Narayan Pathak, Chaturbhuj Mishra, Sridhar Mishra, Baba Kadamdash, Harihar Pathak, Baba Maniram, Vednad, Suresh Dubey, etc have contributed immensely in the development of Magahi language.
➤ The language gained importance in 1952, by the establishment of Magahi Parishad at Patna and publication of monthly journal Magahi.
Hindi Language in Bihar
➤ Hindi is declared as the state language of Bihar according to Bihar Official Language Act, 1950. It is spoken in the entire state. All the administrative work of the state is carried on in this language.
➤ Various governmental organisations are run by State Government of Bihar for the development of Hindi language like Rashtra Bhasha Parishad, Bihar Hindi Granth Academy, etc. Kesri Kumar, Nalin Vimochan Sharma, Dr Kumar Vimal are prominent Hindi writers from Bihar.
Kaitha Script
Kaitha/Kaithi is a script on which many languages have developed in Bihar. The first press to print in Kaitha script was Khadagvilas Press which was also the first press in Bihar. Chandi Prasad published Varna-Vinod for small children. The press was set-up with the efforts of George Grierson, Bhudev Mukhopadhay, Mathura Nath Sinha, etc.
Urdu Language in Bihar
➤ Urdu language developed in 12th century, however proper development took place in 17th century.
➤ ‘Naksh-e-Paydar’ was the first history of Bihar written in Urdu language by Ali Mohammad Shah Ajimabadi.
➤ Suhail Ajimabad helped in the development of progressive Urdu thoughts. Kazi Abdul Hadid did research in Urdu language.
➤ ‘Do Gaj Jamin’, a Urdu novel by Abdul Samad has been awarded by Sahitya Academy Award.
➤ For the development of Urdu language, the State Government has established Urdu Academy.
Literature of Bihar (Bihar GK in English)
Bihar is a rich state in terms of literature. The state has produced several writers in Hindi,Maithili, Urdu and English who have contributed towards adding literary gems. The newspaper was the first form of formal article writing in India.
Literary Personalities from Bihar
Devkinandan Khatri
➤ He was born on 29th June, 1861, in Samastipur. He was an Hindi writer, who belonged to the first generation of popular novelists in the modern Hindi language and first author of mystery novels in Hindi.
➤ He popularised Hindi language as people specially learnt the language to read his books. He also established the Lehri Press at Varanasi.
➤ His famous works include Chandrakanta, Kajar ki Kothari, Narendra-Mohini, Kusum Kumari, Virendra Veer, Gupta Godana, Katora Bhar Khoon, etc.
➤ He died in 1931.
Sadal Mishra
➤ He was born in 1767, in Bhojpur in the village of Dhruv-Deeha. He was among the pioneer writers of the Hindi language that was taking shape in late 17th century.
➤ His style of writing was lucid and began to be acknowledged as first step towards development of the Hindi language.
➤ His famous works include Chandravati, Ramacharit, Phoolan ke Bichone, etc.
Ganga Nath Jha
➤ He was born on 15th September, 1872, at Sarisopahi in Madhubani. He was the first Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University in 1923. He wrote in many languages.
➤ In Sanskrit, the wrote book like ‘Vigyan Bhikshu Ka Yogsar Sangraha’, ‘Bela Mahatayam’, ‘Bhakti Kallolini, ‘Bhavbodhini and ‘Prabhakar Pradip’. In Maithili, he wrote ‘Vedanta Deepika’.
➤ In Hindi, he wrote Nyaya Prakash, Vaishvik Darshan and Kavi Rahasya. In English he wrote, ‘Sankracharya’ and his work for the upliftment of the country.
Bhikari Thakur
➤ He was born on 18th December, 1887 Qutubpur village of Saran district. He is also known as Shakespeare of Bhojpuri for his contribution in this language.
➤ His most famous work ‘Bidesiya’, now has taken the form of dance-drama and is very popular in Bihar.
➤ In his honour, the State Government has given Bhikari Thakur, Bhojpuri Samman Award for his exceptional literary contributions in Bhojpuri.
Kashi Prasad Jaiswal
➤ He was born in Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh) on 27th November, 1881. He was an advocate at Calcutta (Kolkata) High Court. He developed on interest in history and came to Patna in 1916.
➤ He gave a structure to Patna Museum and published a book ‘Patliputra’ and ‘Hindu Polity’. This English book ‘History of India’ was published in 1930. KP Jaiswal Research Institute was set up in 1950 in his honour.
Shiv Pujan Sahay
➤ He was born in 1893 in Buxar. He was a noted Hindi novelist, editor and a prose writer.
➤ His stories and novels are Wey Din Wey Log, Kahani Ka Plot, Mera Jeevan, Smritishesh, Hindi Bhasha Aur Sahitya, Gram Sudhar, Dehati Duniya, Vibhuti, Mata Ka Anchal, Tyagamurthi Nirala.
Rambriksh Benipuri
➤ He was a Hindi writer, born on 23rd December, 1899 in a small village named Benipur in Muzaffarpur in Bihar. He was a freedom fighter and spent 8 years in prison (jail).
➤ He was also a journalist of Hindi literature and started several newspapers like ‘Yuvak’ in 1929 and regularly contributed in various others to spread the idea of nationalism and freedom from British rule.
➤ His famous work include Mati Ki Murat, Patito Ke Desh Me, Chita Ke Phool, Qaidi Ki Patni, Laltara, Ambpali, Sita Ki Ma, etc. He was elected in 1957 for Bihar Legislative Assembly.
Anup Lal Mandal
➤ He was born in Sameli village of Purnia district in 1896. He is also known as Premchand of Bihar.
➤ His famous works include Uttar Pandulipi, Abhiyan Ka Path, Aawaro Ki Duniya, Toofam Aur Tinke, Rakt Aut Rang, Kendra Aur Paridhi, Jawala, Jyotirmayi, etc.
Mohan Lal Mahato Viyogi
➤ He was born on 1st November, 1902, in the village of Upridih in Gaya. He wrote many patriotic and motivational writings like Aryavrat, Nirman, Ektara, Nirmalya Aur Kalpana.
➤ He was also a great cartoonist. His cartoons were published in Madhuri, Manorama and Sudha magazines.
Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’
➤ H was born on 23rd September, 1908 in Simaria village in Begusarai district. He was a Hindi poet, essayist, patriot and academic, who is considered as one of the most important modern Hindi poets. His poetry was nationalist in nature.
➤ His poetry transmitted ‘Veer Rasa’ and he has been hailed as a Rashtrakavi (‘National poet’) on account of his inspiring patriotic compositions.
➤ Some of his greatest works are Urvashi, Rashmirathi and Parashuram ki Prateeksha.
Laxmi Narayan Sudhanshu
➤ He was born on 15th December, 1906 at Purnea. He was among the pioneer writers of Hindi language.
➤ His famous works include novel ‘Matriprem and Kavya Me Abhivyanjana Vaad’. He was also elected the member of Bihar Vidhan Sabha in 1962.
Harimohan Jha
➤ He was born in Bajitpur village in Vaishali District in the 1908. He wrote inspirational articles, stories, novels on ill practices, superstitions related to religion.
➤ His popular works include Kanyadaan, Dwiragaman, Rangshala Babak Sanskar, Charchari Ekadashi, Pranamay Devta, Khattar Kak Tarang, Jeevan Yatra, etc.
Vaidyanalh-Mishra
➤ He was better known as his pen name Nagarjun.
➤ He was born in 1911 in Madhubani district. He was a popular Hindi and Maithili poet and novelist, popularly known as ‘Janakavi’ (The People’s Poet).
➤ He has written a number of novels, short stories, literary biographies and travelogues.
➤ His novels are Rati Nath Ki Chachi, Balachnama, Baba Bateshar Nath, Himalaya Ki Betiya, Nai Paudh, Varun Ke Bete, Dukh Mochan, Ugratara, Jamania Ka Baba, Kumbhi Pak, Abhinandan, Imaratia, Navturiya.
Father Camille Bulcke
➤ He was born on 1st September, 1909, in Belgium. He came to India and gave his precious contributions in Hindi literature. He lived in Ranchi and wrote many articles around the social structure of Bihar.
➤ Camille Bulcke obtained Indian citizenship in 1951.
➤ His famous works include Dictionary from English to Hindi, Neel Pakshi, ‘Ram Katta: Utpatti Aur Vikas’, ‘Naya Vidhan’ (translation of new testament to Hindi), etc. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1974.
Gopal Singh Nepali
➤ He was born in Bettiah in Bihar on 11th August, 1911. He was an eminent Nepalese poet of Hindi literature and a famous lyricist of Bollywood.
➤ He was a Poet of Post-Chhayavaad period and he wrote several collections of Hindi poems including ‘Umang’ (published in 1933).
➤ He was also a journalist and edited at least four Hindi magazines namely, Ratlam Times, Chitrapat, Sudha and Yogi.
➤ During Sino-Indian War of 1962, he wrote many patriotic songs and poems which include Savan, Kalpana, Neelima, Naveen Kalpana Karo, etc. His seminal volume is ‘The Newars: An Ethno-Sociological Study of a Himalayan Community’ (1965).
Nawal Kishore Dhawal
➤ He was born on 11th November, 1911 in Bihar. He was a litterateur and freedom fighter. He was a writer, poet, proof reader, editor, critic, journalist and author of many different literary works of his time. Dhawal was brought up in Munger district.
➤ He participated in freedom struggle in 1932 and was sent to jail 10 times in the war of Indian independence. All his works were written while he was Literature Officer in Song and Drama Section of Public Relation Department Patna, Government of Bihar.
➤ Before his service in Public Relation Department, he had edited Arunodaya (weekly), Veer Balak (monthly),Mashal (weekly), Kar Aur Vyaapar (monthly), Chetavani (weekly), Aadmi (weekly) published by JamalpurMunger during 1946 to 1952.
Aarsi Prasad Singh
➤ He was born in Airot village in Samastipur district on 19th August, 1911. His real name was Ram Chandra Prasad Singh. He writes in Maithili and Hindi language.
➤ His first contribution to the literary world was at the age of 16 years when his poem ‘Ama Ka Pedh’ was published in a magazine.
➤ In 1938, his book of poems ‘Kalpi’ was published. He was awarded with Sahitya Akademi Award for his contribution toMaithili language.
Indradeep Sinha
➤ He was born in July, 1914 in Siwan district. He was a lecturer and journalist and Secretary of the Bihar State Council of the Communist Party of India from 1962 to 1967.
➤ He had also served as the General Secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha from 1973, until the late 1990s.
Janki Ballabh Shastri
➤ He was born on 5th February, 1916, in the village of Maigra of Gaya district. He was a poet of Chhayavad and mostly wrote in Hindi language. He refused to accept the Padma Shri which was conferred upon him in 2010. He also refused this award in 1994. He wrote many poems.
➤ His famous works are Ankur, Bal-lata, Rup-Arup, Avantika, Vitaan, etc. He also wrote the Mahakavya, ‘Radha’.
Anil Kumar Mukherjee
➤ He was born on 14th January, 1916, in Bangladesh.He established Bihar Art Theatre in 1961 which was later changed into Theater Institute by UNESCO.
➤ His famous work is ‘Viplavi’ which became very popular. He also established Bihar Natya Kala Training Centre in 1970.
➤ His famous works include Palki, Kathghare Me Qaid EK Aur Insaan, Trial of Shekh Mujibur Rehman, Katputli, Akela, Kanchan Rang, etc.
Nalin Vilochan Sharma
➤ He was born on 18th February, 1916 in Patna. He wrote in Hindi language and was a critically acclaimed writer.

Udayraj Singh

Phanishwar Nath ‘Renu’
➤ He was born on 4th March, 1921, at the village Aurahi Hingna in Araria district. He was highly popular writer of modern Hindi literature in the Post-Premchand era. His ‘Maila Anchal’ is very popular novel.
➤ Phanishwar Nath ‘Renu’ is best known for pioneering and promoting the voice of the contemporary rural India through the genre of ‘Aanchalik Upanyas’ (Regional story).
➤ His short story ‘Maare Gaye Gulfam’ was adapted into a film ‘Teesri Kasam’ (The Third Vow) by Basu Bhattacharya. Later his short story ‘Panchlight’ (Petromax) was made into a TV short film.
Poddar Ramavatar Arun
➤ He was born on 24th November, 1923 at Samastipur. He received a number of awards for his literary works like Meera Samman, Kalidas Samman, Father Bulke Samman, Mahakair Vyas, Sahitya Bhushan Samman, Vidya Sagar Samman, etc.

➤ He was born on 8th May, 1925 in East Champaran. He was a poet, novelist and freedom fighter. His poems, ghazals and stories evoke patriotism and human values.
➤ Romanticism and struggle of life are also the important aspect of his writing. His poetry expresses concerns of people’s life struggle, their dreams and hopes.
Chaturbhuj
➤ He was born on 15th January, 1928, in Bihar Sharif. He wrote his first play Meghnath at the age of
21. He was conferred with the award by Uttar Pradesh Government for his play ‘Mir Qasim’. He also wrote plays like Bhagwan Buddha and Kalinga Vijay.
➤ His famous works include Patliputra Ka Rajkumar, Kalinga Vijaya, Bhagwan Buddha, Sikandar Porus, Jhansi Ki Rani, Bhisma Pratigya, Noorjahan Karan, Vir Abhimanyu, Aravali Ka Sher, etc.
Kumar Vimal
➤ He was born on 12th October, 1931, in Bhagalpur district. He was a learned man and taught in DJ College, Munger, Har Prasad Das Jain College Arrah and Patna University.

Abdul Qavi Desnavi
➤ He was born on 1st November, 1930 in Desna village in Nalanda district. He was an Urdu language writer, critic, bibliographer and linguist. He has written many books on Urdu literature.
➤ His important works include Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Mirza Ghalib and Allama Muhammad Iqbal. He was awarded with several awards for his literary work.
Madhukar Singh
➤ He was born on 2nd January, 1934 in Midnapur district of West Bengal. His residence was in Dharhara of Bhojpur district. He was a famous story writer.
➤ Madhukar Singh led Samanantar Kahani Andolan in 1970s.
➤ He received a number of awards like Sarvooch Kathakar Samman, Phanishwar Nath Renu Samman, Nai Dhara Rachna Samman, etc.
➤ He wrote about 35 books and 17 collection of stories with 13 novels.

Robin Shah
➤ He was born on 20th December, 1936, in Munger district. His full name was Robin Shah Pushp. He was a famous story writer, novelist, screenplay writer and play writer from Bihar.
➤ His famous works include Dulhan Bazar (Novel), Agnikund, etc. He died on 30th October, 2014.
Ram Shobhit Prasad Singh
➤ He was born on 10th January, 1936, in Saran district. He was a famous novelist, story writer and play writer.
➤ He also got acclaimed as a renewed librarian and was connected with Sinha Library in 1960. He also edited the monthly magazine ‘Pustakalaya’ till 1979.
Binod Bihari Verma
➤ He was born on 3rd December, 1937, in Darbhanga district. He was a Maithili literature writer and a doctor by profession.
➤ He is most noted for his pioneering work on ‘Panjis’, which are ancient genealogical charts, Maithili Karna Kayasthak Panjik Sarvekshan.
➤ He is also known for his depiction of rural poor of the Mithila region in his writings. He has published in magazines like ‘Mithila Mihir’ and ‘Karnamrit’.
➤ He had command over a number of languages including Urdu, Sanskrit, Odia, Assamese and Bengali and scripts of various Indian languages viz old Maithili, Assamese, Gurmukhi, Odia and Nepali.
Paresh Sinha
➤ He was born on 13th January, 1937, at Singhriyava village in Fatuha (Patna). His first work ‘Sukhadh’ was published in 1947, at the age of ten years.
➤ His famous works are Jabron Ki Chauo Me, Uttar Do Yaksh (collection of poems), Gandhi Nahi Marega, Purush Chaya, Murde, Chehra Dar Chehra and Katey Hue Log (play). He also made two telefilms ‘Andhere Ke Virudh’ and Ek Muhim Ye Bhi’.
Kalanath Mishra
➤ He was born on 19th December, 1959. He is a famous Hindi author. His writing spans several genres of Hindi literature, including Kavita (poetry), Kahani (story), Laghukatha (novelettes), Samiksha (reviews) and reports.
➤ His publications are Hindi Upanyas Me Sahityakaron Ka Charitra Vidhan, Hindi Upanyas me Sanskrit Rachanakaron ka Jivan Vrit, Jivan Chhand (Kavita Sangrah), Aawara Masiha: Ek Upanyasik Jivani, Mera Jivan Swet Shyam (Kavita Sangraha).
